Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the Deputy Chief’s primary function is to plan, organize, direct, implement and control the operations and training programs for all full-time, casual and volunteer personnel of Emergency Services. The goal being to provide our citizens’ with professional and competent emergency services personnel in order to protect life and property through efficient and well structured fire, ambulance and dispatch services.
The Deputy Fire Chief is also responsible for the compliance and enforcement of codes, by-laws, standards and regulations; including occupational health and safety pertaining to fire, ambulance and dispatch services.
In addition, the Deputy Fire Chief does serve as a Duty Officer; and performs Human Resource responsibilities such as performance management, training and development, interviewing, and scheduling, and other duties as outlined in the job description and as assigned.
The successful candidate should have a minimum five years’ experience as a fire service instructor and fire service officer, a minimum three years’ experience in pre-hospital medical care and as an Incident Commander, a minimum two years’ experience with human resource functions, and experience working in a combination career/volunteer fire department environment.
The required qualifications are as follows: Post-secondary education in Business or Public Administration or Fire Service Management, High School diploma, Class 3 Driver’s License Airbrake, First Responder Level III, AED and Spinal, CPR / HCP, NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Operations, NFPA 1001 Fire fighter Level II, NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator, NFPA 1006 Technical Rescuer (rope rescue & auto extrication), NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II, NFPA 1041 and Fire Service Instructor II
Assets include the ability to communicate in Inuktitut or French and having an understanding of northern environments.
Equivalencies that include a combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities to formal education may be considered.
Due to the nature of this position, the successful candidate would be required to submit a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check. In addition, an acceptable Driver’s Abstract is required for this position.
