COORDINATED EMERGENCY RESPONSE GROUP UPDATE: 2 PM NOVEMBER 8, 2018
NOVEMBER 8, 2018 (IQALUIT, NUNAVUT) – The Coordinated Emergency Response Group continues to coordinate the response and recovery efforts to the Northmart fire to ensure that essential services, including food, prescription drugs and water continue to be available to residents. “On behalf of Council, I would like to thank all the Government of Nunavut Territorial Departments, retailers and community groups who have come together to provide assistance during this emergency for our City,” said Acting Mayor Kyle Sheppard. “I would especially like to thank the Iqaluit Fire Department for their quick response in dealing with the fire, and in keeping it under control so that it did not spread to other buildings. I would also like to thank other City Departments, including Public Works and Municipal Enforcement who continued to provide important support services contributing to the response efforts.” The Coordinated Emergency Response Group would also like to advise residents of the following updates: - The City is working with all levels of government and retailers to ensure a timely and efficient response to this emergency; - Retailers are working together to ensure that there no interruption of services to residents, including food and prescription drugs; - The Group is asking residents to please refrain from hoarding food. Please buy only what you need, and be sure to look out for and after those neighbours who may be vulnerable; - Retailers, as part of the Response and Recovery Group, have also assured residents that they will continue to provide food and supplies at the regular price – there will be no price gouging; - Residents who may require drinking water are asked to go the Arctic Winter Games Arena with their own container between 10 AM and 10 PM; - An update regarding the Northmart building has indicated that the warehouse has been demolished, and that the main area will be inspected to determine the state of the building; - Elders that were placed at the Elders’ Qammaq will be provided with hotel accommodations for this evening. Canadian Red Cross is also providing support.
- Firefighters from other Nunavut communities, the Office of the Fire Marshall and the Airport Fire Department have joined the response to provide assistance to our Fire Department; - The City is also asking residents to continue to conserve water during this time.
