Reminder: Helmet / Insurance / Registration / Licence Plate Required For All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)
April 5, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City would like to remind residents that insurance as well as registration and a licence plate issued from the Department of Motor Vehicles are required for anyone using an allterrain
vehicle (ATV) within city limits.

As per The Nunavut All Terrain Vehicles Act and City of Iqaluit Bylaw #894 the Traffic Safety Bylaw, an individual could receive a fine up to $575, and could also have their ATV seized if they are stopped and do not have valid insurance or $150 for not having valid registration.

If the ATV is seized, the owner would be responsible for any impoundment and storage fees.

As well, a reminder that, as per The Nunavut All Terrain Vehicles Act and Bylaw #894, helmets must be worn by anyone riding on an ATV, as well helmets are required to be worn as per Municipal Bylaw 894 within “all” All-Terrain, Utility-Terrain, Recreational Off Road Vehicles, whether or not the vehicle is equipped with an enclose cab structure.

Seatbelts are also mandatory where the ATV manufacturer provides a restraint system for the driver and passenger(s).
