Sewage Line Backup or Spill
March 17, 2022 – (Iqaluit, Nunavut)

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that building owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their sewage service lines.

If residents notice a sewage back up or spill, they should contact their property owner or their plumber as soon as possible. Residents should also report the issue to the City, at 867-979-5630, so city lines in the area can be monitored to avoid blockages.

Sewage spills to the environment should be reported to the Government of Nunavut spill line at 867-920-8130.

To help keep the entire sewage system working well and to prevent blockages to sewer service lines and the main sanitary sewer lines, the City also reminds residents not to flush or put any of the following products down drains:

• Any type of hygiene products including but not limited to: wipes (biodegradable, "flushable" or not), tampons, rags, condoms, diapers and paper towels.
• Hair
• Dental floss
• Grease, fats and cooking oils
